In this instance we speak of illustrations that – besides intending to express the mood of the film – seek to portray the world told by the story. These illustrations often get made in the aspect ratio of the film for the sake of the illusion, thus foreshadowing the role of the storyboards in the processes prior to the shoot. The role of the concept designs in preproduction is twofold. On the one hand they serve as the basis for set designs and architectural drawings as well as help location scouting, on the other hand the completed visual documents – similar to the storyboards – provide a permanent reference point for the crew.
